Carmen Schutz
Provisional Psychologist
My name is Carmen Schutz and I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist and fellow human. I grew up in Red Deer, Alberta where I have lived most of my life. When I graduated with my undergraduate degree in Psychology, I was accepted to graduate school in Vancouver, where I set off on my first great adventure. While in school, I simultaneously worked in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and loved every second of it.
I am incredibly passionate about working with and advocating for those who struggle with substances and trauma. Through these experiences, I developed a special interest in becoming a therapist and pursued my masters while still serving these communities. Working with this population is where I really saw and felt the importance in meeting people where they’re at. I also learned how important it was to operate from a non-judgemental space and allow people time to build trust and safety. I observed how compassion and understanding takes relationships a long way. Finally, I learned the importance of having a community to lean on and experience life with especially through the tough times.
After 5 wild years learning, growing, and thriving in Vancouver, family began to take focus in my life. I decided to move back home with my husband to raise our first child close to home and closer to family. Now we are living in Airdrie, raising our two children, and enjoying a quieter life.
5 fast facts
1. I love to hike, connecting to nature is my biggest grounding tool. I once hiked up the Stawamus Chief Mountain in Squamish, BC and slept overnight on the top with just a sleeping bag.
2. I have worked in Addiction and Mental Health for 8 years, it has been my greatest passion and where I have learned the most about people and myself.
3. I’ve recently developed a love for gardening and dream of owning my own acreage one day, complete with goats of course!
4. I believe that healing isn’t linear and that there is always room to grow. The minute we think we’re healed something unexpected pops up and we feel it again, and that provides us an opportunity for growth.
5. After living in one of Canada’s largest cities, I significantly value a slower pace of life. Though we have busy seasons, having down time is necessary to process and heal.
