“What am I in the eyes of most people—a nonentity, an eccentric, or an unpleasant person—somebody who has no position in society and will never have; in short, the lowest of the low. All right, then—even if that were absolutely true, then I should one day like to show by my work what such an eccentric, such a nobody, has in his heart. That is my ambition, based less on resentment than on love in spite of everything, based more on a feeling of serenity than on passion. Though I am often in the depths of misery, there is still calmness, pure harmony and music inside me. I see paintings or drawings in the poorest cottages, in the dirtiest corners. And my mind is driven towards these things with an irresistible momentum.” -Vincent Van Gogh
I am currently in my final year as a masters student in the program of Psychotherapy and Spirituality: Art Therapy Stream at St. Stephen’s College. Following high school, I took a gap year, then entered into the field of psychology before transferring and completing my undergraduate degree in Addictions Counselling at the University of Lethbridge. This led me to the opportunity of working with a 12-Step based in-patient addictions treatment facility.
Throughout most of my life I have called the rural Lacombe area home and this has fostered a great love for the community and desire to grow with it. I have found myself driven towards the idea of ‘meaning making’ and the importance of finding purpose in life; my therapeutic style reflects this. As a result, I sought a school that specializes in spirituality or similarly, self-actualization. As well, I have an irresistible love for art and the power it holds as a vehicle for self-expression, which is why I chose the Art Therapy stream in my program.
Within my academic years I was given the opportunity to explore many different avenues of employment, in order that I might advance towards becoming a well-rounded individual. I appreciated my experiences with a childhood educational program as well as my manual labor jobs working with plants, animals and in oilfield camps. Found during these times was a love of tree care and I will often be found happily pruning away each spring. Most days you will find me spending time with my Quaker parrot (his name is Luka) and enjoying the company of a good book or close family and friends.
I have devoted much effort to the pursuit of personal progression with the objective of not only gaining insight into myself, but of also pursuing understanding others, that I may assist in facilitating their journeys of growth. I do, however, recognize that I am still quite young and acknowledge being in the initial stages on my voyage of becoming the advantage to others I have discovered I wish to be. As I continue on this journey I look forward to learning and growing together.
